Bernese Mountain Dogs were used for hauling the farmers' milk and cheese from the high-mountain pastures around Bern, Switzerland, to the lower-land markets. Frequently only young children accompanied them, and the gentle, patient nature of these large dogs endeared them to the whole family. They are still considered excellent, all-around farm dogs in their native land.
