Practice Safe Internet
Have a virus scanner! AVG Anti-Virus is free and works great.
Have a malware and spybot scanner. Two I recommend are SpyBot Search & Destroy and MalwareBytes Anti Malware.
AdAware is also good.
Have a software firewall. Windows Firewall works okay on incomming packets, but doesn't alert you to outgoing stuff... which is a problem when you are infected with a spambot and unknowingly sending out mass emails. ZoneAlarm is recommended by PC Magazine and is free.
Have a hardware firewall. A wired router is a great tool to make your computer invisible to the internet.
Use McAfee Site Advisor or Firefox's safe-scripting addon when surfing the web. If you land on an unsafe site that suddenly tells you you have a virus and to scan using their software, STOP everything, scan with MalwareBytes AND Spybot, then unplug your computer!
Don't open email attachments unless you're sure of the source! Don't open email greeting cards! There are no Nigerian princes who want to give you all their money! Ebay, Paypal and your bank will never email you to update your account. And never buy ANYTHING from a spammer!
Be safe. |
